It's true.  Gaining strong skills in the most popular software used worldwide today can generally help you with your current job, getting a new job or jumping into another career all together.  But what does that really mean?

First, let's look at why it's worth learning Excel, PowerPoint and Word.  In general, not having digital skills effectively eliminates the possibility of working in entire segments of the job market.  This may not matter if you are already employed in a job where these skills are not needed right now but what if that changes?  And, we all now know this can literally change overnight.

More specifically, how can each of these software programs benefit you in the working world?  With Excel skills you can organize data in easy-to-navigate ways, do both basic and complex math functions, can translate lots of data into visuals like graphs (charts) and use data to make educated forecasts.  With Word skills you can enhance communication between your co-workers and external resources, you can create productive promotional material, and you can organize data collection much better with the use of tables functioning as forms.  Then, with PowerPoint you have a tool that can be used to engage and wow an audience, can add a creative flare to your work allowing you and your company to stand out in a crowd.

Of note, a lot of folks jump in and use these amazing products by choosing to "wing it."  And there's nothing wrong with that but it raises the question of why?  If you skip learning some Excel basics like Absolute References, you risk creating files with inaccurate answers.  In Word, when you skip learning about Tab Settings,  you are literally setting yourself up for more work, or keystrokes, that when trying to undo, makes even more work.  And with PowerPoint, when you skip understanding how master slide layouts work, you may find yourself in the middle of a presentation where  you see for the first time that your Font Sizes have all gone whacky!

So maybe your future deserves more than "winging it" when there are affordable options available? The GS fast-tracked online Courses in MS Office can turn your skills in these most popular programs into your ticket for a more productive work experience, a chance at that much wanted promotion or make it possible for you to re-invent yourself in a whole new career!  So why not invest in yourself today?  Visit www.gssoftwareconsulting.ca to learn more or email me, [email protected] any time.

One of the most powerful computer skills in today's Job Market is undoubtably Microsoft Excel.  There are so many jobs that open up to job seekers when their ability to navigate a worksheet (spreadsheet) become not only second nature but can also be done expertly.  The first role that immediately opens up is data entry where worksheets are used to easily organize information while also making the entry of data easier and faster with the use of pre-set-up selections ready to choose from drop-down menus.

If you are looking to explore other career options, learning Excel will also open up other possibilities for very well paying positions like the many types of Analyst positions ranging from Business System Analysts to Market Research, to Human Resources and so much more - the possibilities are literally endless are not going to end any time soon.

So if you are considering, or needing to seek a new career, Excel may be your ticket as you are exploring your options for expanding both your computer and employment options.  With GS, you can start with my All-in-One Excel GS Course that carefully combines the most used and needed topics from the traditional Introductory and Intermediate courses.  Then, you can move onto my set of Targeted-Skills GS sessions - how to set up Excel to function as a Database, how to use the Data to create Graphs, then how to use Excel to accurately track business Activities.  Click here to download the GS Calendar,  check out the GS Bookings online calendar or reach out to [email protected] to book a time that works best for you.

Instructor-led Training vs. Self-Paced

Self-paced courses are everywhere now and have become very popular.  And rightly so.  I've taken many of these over the years myself.  But when thinking about theses two types of courses, self-serve versus a class led by a live instructor, how do they compare and what are the pros and the cons?

Let's start with what's good:

For Self-serve courses, watching pre-recorded videos is convenient.  It can be done any time of day or night.  You can start and stop as you like and rewind as many times as needed.  When you are done, sometimes there is a quiz that can make you feel like you were successful and often you can get a certificate too.

For Instructor-led courses, the content can be adjusted if needed.  I know as an instructor for many years, I've found that I often come to the class prepared to describe topics in multiple ways using different words and examples.  Not everyone grasps concepts in the same manner.  The course pace, or timing, can also be adjusted, going slower or moving faster adding in additional topics for the benefit of the student, a bonus.  Plus, additional methods of delivering concepts can be layered in as needed.  Students can ask questions and receive immediate feedback.

Then what about the cons?:

For Self-serve, a misunderstanding of concepts will go un-checked.  There's an assumption that what the student is going to watch will be understood.  It's a lonely way to learn and an attendee may not complete the course if they are struggling or unsure.  They can cheat on the quiz by just doing screen captures as they watch.

For Instructor-led, timing can be a challenge though many independent instructors can usually be flexible.  If the class is too big, it can make the session messy.  Training of less then eight attendees is optimal.  If the instructor isn't well prepared, the course can go off-track and become difficult to re-adjust.

In summary, both methods have merit but overall, self-serve tends to be more conceptual whereas instructor-led, when done well, can really drill down on topics and also have the added benefit of providing extra encouragement for attendees.  Plus, if there are additional courses available, the instructor can help the student make the best course selection depending upon their overall goal.  It's best to not discount either method, learning is always good.  Consider your ultimate reason for taking the course, maybe try out both, and then decide where you benefitted the most.
